PREVIOUSLY, THE CHESTNUTS WERE TRANSPORTED AND STORED AT ORDINARY AMBIENT TEMPERATURE AND AS A RESULT OF USING INADEQUATE EQUIPMENT AND POOR HANDLING OPERATIONS, THE PRODUCTS SUFFERED SEVERE WEIGHT LOSSES, QUALITY DETERIORATION, ROT AND SEED GERMINATION. SINCE THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TRANSPORT CHAIN, THE CHESTNUTS CAN NOW BE TRANSPORTED UNDER SUITABLE CONDITIONS OF TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY. IN USING REFRIGERATED STORAGE, THE NUTS CAN NOW BE HARVESTED IN THE RIPE CONDITION, PRESTORED IN WET SAND FOR A SHORT PERIOD, THEN PACKED IN PVC FILM AND PRECOOLED PRIOR TO TRANSPORT. WITH STORAGE CONDITIONS AT 273 TO 271 K (0 TO -2 DEG C), 90% RH AND A 5% CO2 CONTENT INTHE ROOM, CHESTNUTS CAN BE KEPT FOR 7-10 MONTHS AND MAINTAIN GOOD QUALITY.
