Summary

This paper proposes an energetic analysis of a Carbon Dioxide (R744) Medium Temperature (MT) plant for supermarket application using groundwater as cold sink. The aim of the study is understand how much the presence of groundwater helps the convenience use of R744 for refrigeration in commercial application in the hot temperature region. The use of groundwater reduces the energy peak consumption and allows sizing the plant on a lower and quite constant energy target. Besides, with the possibility to avoid the use of air gas cooler, reduction of roof occupancy and noise are gained, especially during summer nights. In this work a model for a MT CO2 trans-critical/sub-critical simulates the cycle performance with change of loads and external conditions. The performance are calculated hourly basing on real cooling demand data monitored in 2011 year and real external conditions. Parametrical analysis has been conduced to understand the optimal plant design. Evaluations of different groundwater pumping technologies are considered.
