Survey of the use and emissions of chlorofluorocarbons from large chillers.

Summary

Under contract to ASHRAE a Texas company conducted a survey to study use and losses of CFC refrigerants from centrifugal chillers. First results on 48 chillers, show that losses are about 10% of total charge per year for R11 and 7% for R12. Most of failures come from purge units. Application of Montreal Protocol will lead rapidly to the use of substitute refrigerants, such as R123. However many existent units are expected to be suppressed before the end of their normal lifetime, or retrofitted to R123, if phase out of R11 and R12 take place in year 2000.
