Summary
In Sweden many cities have district heating schemes, often supplied through heat pump systems. The article describes one taking heat from sewage effluent which operates on R500 using four centrifugal compressor plants, one of which has recently been retrofitted for R134a. The retrofitting required the replacement of the compressor impellor and various gaskets. 23 tonnes of the new refrigerant was supplied. The plants operate either in parallel or in series depending on the effluent temperature, and the shell and tube evaporators are equipped with tube cleaning apparatus. D.W.H.
