Summary

Varying concentrations of CO2 and O2 were achieved by mixing 2 separate gas flows (air and pure CO2 or N2) in a chamber containing aubergines and analysing the exhaust gas. A modified atmosphere was obtained by regulating the flow rates of the 2 gases. Respiration rates were measured at 0, 2.6, 4.5 and 6.7% CO2 and 20.6, 12.6, 6.6 and 1.7% O2. Results suggested that this system was suitable for measuring the respiration rate of fresh produce under controlled atmosphere conditions.
