Testing the available alternatives: an examination of R134a, R152a and propane.

Type of article: Article
Summary
R134a and R152a were considered to be the main candidates as replacements for R12, although it now emerges that R152a will be withdrawn from the market for flammability reasons. For R22, only propane can be considered to be available, as the compositions of the mixtures provided by the chemical industry have yet to be finalized. The performance tests showed propane to be a real drop-in replacement for R22 and, despite its flammability, the prospects for future applications look promising.
