Summary
Cooling degree days are explained in the article. It describes how they are used to detect cases when heating and cooling in buildings are running simultaneously because of an undetected control malfunction. An actual example is described. It also notes how the effectiveness of cooling degree days can be greatly improved by separate submetering of electrical supplies to the chiller plant. Some historical cooling degree data are presented in tables.
