The Channel tunnel: making tracks; hyper-ventilation; cooling the tunnels.

Type of article: Article

Summary

The history of the attempts to build a tunnel under the Channel, a general description of the work which has been achieved, and some accurate data related to the ventilation system and the tunnel air cooling equipment, are given in the three articles. The system consists mainly of chilled water cooling units; the water circulates in two circuits comprising 400 mm diameter ducts, each circuit serving one half of the tunnel. The air draughts caused by passing trains are sufficient to create the necessary air convection for good heat transfer. The characteristics of fans and chilled water supply units are given. Air temperatures can be held below 30 deg C in all circumstances.
