Summary

THE PAPER REPORTS THE HISTORY OF REFRIGERATING PLANTS USED FOR FOODSTUFF PRESERVATION. PARTICULAR ATTENTION IS PAID TO THE DEVELOPMENTS IN THE COLD CHAIN THAT HAVE OCCURRED IN THE LAST DECADES, WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF NEW TYPES OF ROTARY COMPRESSORS, SUCH AS SCREW AND SCROLL COMPRESSORS, AND IMPROVED FINNED COILS WITH CORRUGATED OR LOUVRE FINS AND INTERNALLY GROOVED TUBES. ENERGY EFFICIENCY IS CONSIDERED A CRITICAL ASPECT OF THE ACTUAL REFRIGERATING SYSTEM AND THE EXERGY ANALYSIS IS PROPOSED AS A POWERFUL TOOL FOR RECOGNIZING THE POSSIBILITIES OF IMPROVEMENT: SOME DIAGRAMS SHOWING THE EXERGY LOSSES AS FUNCTIONS OF HEAT TRANSFER TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCES ARE PRESENTED. THE CONCLUSION IS THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO REDUCE SUBSTANTIALLY ENERGY CONSUMPTION FOR FOODSTUFF PRESERVATION BY IMPROVING THE PERFORMANCES OF HEAT EXCHANGERS, THERMAL INSULATION AND COMPRESSORS AT PARTIAL LOAD OPERATION.
