The free-piston Stirling cooling system: improving the energy efficiency of refrigerators.

Author(s) : Greenpeace, Glob. Cooling

Type of monograph: Report

Summary

The report has been prepared for the IIR 19th International Congress of Refrigeration, August 20-25, 1995, the Hague, the Netherlands. A free-piston Stirling cycle cooling system, fit for application in domestic and leisure refrigeration cabinets is developed which has a number of advantages over the Rankine cycle compressor cooling system, the most notable being its energy efficiency and its lack of noise. It is estimated that the energy efficiency of the best available Rankine refrigerator would be improved upon by 30-50%, if the Rankine system is replaced by the Stirling cooling system. Contents: the Stirling refrigeration project; the Stirling refrigerator; details on the free-piston Stirling cooler. Basic thermodynamics of the free-piston Stirling cycle is given in an appendix.
