Type of article: Article

Summary

THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES THE SITUATION IN THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA, WHERE HE FOUND THERE WERE HARDLY ANY COMPREHENSIVE REFRIGERATING OR FREEZING COLD CHAINS. THIS IS DUE MAINLY TO A LACK OF MECHANICALLY REFRIGERATED TRUCKS AND RAILWAY CARS ; THE RAILWAY NETWORK ITSELF IS SUFFICIENT AND IN SOME AREAS THERE IS EVEN AN OVERCAPACITY OF COLD STORES. REFRIGERATED RAILWAY CARS CARRY ONLY 20% OF ALL PERISHABLE FOODSTUFFS TRANSPORTED BY RAIL. THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF THESE CARS, AS WELL AS CHINA'S EXPORT SITUATION, VERY LIMITED CONTAINER TRAFFIC, AND CONDITIONS OF ROAD TRANSPORT (WHERE FROZEN MEAT AND FISH ARE OFTEN CARRIED ON OPEN TRUCKS).
