Summary

Technical and practical aspects of perishable food transport are reviewed and discussed. After a preliminary outline of cold chain problems and a survey of the development of refrigerated transport, a report is given of the ISO-mandated standardization of the load units, including pallets and the different kinds of containers. Road transport is described with reference to the thermal specifications of long-and medium-distance vehicles, and to the insulating requirements for distribution vehicles, tanks and multicompartment trucks and trailers. Railroad transport is discussed with reference both to specifications for isothermal and refrigerated rail-cars and to road/rail interchangeable containers. Problems in insulating containers are discussed with reference to the structure of the walls and to insulating materials; the different building techniques are compared. The refrigeration systems used in perishable food transport are summarized and discussed. The last chapter of the review deals with the rules for the certification and testing of the different transport means. A.P.
