Summary

PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF FROZEN AQUEOUS SYSTEMS WERE STUDIED BY THE KINETICS OF P-NITROPHENYLACETATE HYDROLYSIS. GLYCEROL WAS SHOWN TO STABILIZE PH, FAVOURING THE MAINTENANCE OF PHOSPHATE BUFFER SOLUTES. ON THE OTHER HAND, THE CRYOPROTECTANT ACTIVATED HYDROLYSIS, WHICH COULD LEAD TO A PARTIAL DEGRADATION OF BIOSTRUCTURES. THIS FACT SHOULD BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT WHEN DETERMINING THE TIME OF EQUILIBRATION OF BIOLOGICAL MATERIAL IN A CRYOPROTECTIVE MEDIUM BEFORE FREEZING.
