The impact of growth inhibitors on the quality of potatoes and their products during the storage.

Summary

Laboratory studies were conducted to investigate the effect of growth inhibitors on the quality of potatoes and their products during storage. The inhibitor, Stop Kielek 01 DP, was applied at 1 kg/tonne of tubers to very early (Gloria), early (Voke) and mid-early (Mirta) potato cultivars, after which the potatoes were stored for 6-12 months at 9-10 °C and 90-95% relative air humidity. Treatment with the growth inhibitor decreased dry matter loss to 3.1% after 12 months of storage. Starch loss was 3.3 times lower after six months and 1.7 times lower after 12 months. The reducing sugar content was 1.6 and 1.8 times lower in treated samples after 6 and 12 months.
