The impact of new technologies on the development of heat pumps and refrigerating machines.

Summary

The paper identifies the second stage of a Commission of the European Communities sponsored study into improvements in energy efficiency of heat pumps and refrigeration machines. This stage concentrates on compression systems and investigates all components of a system, outlining new developments and suggesting future research. Compressors should be developed for dry or refrigerant lubricated operation (scroll or screw most likely). Motor winding insulation and efficiency improvements are needed. Heat exchanger performance must be improved in both internal and external tube surfaces. Also operation with refrigerant mixtures. Expansion valve control must be improved, also distribution of two-phase flow. All the above depend on long term replacement refrigants for CFCs, and this should take research priority. Acoustic performance is of importance and control must improve to give greater energy efficiency. D.W.H.
