Summary

Safety factors are used to allow for the uncertainty experienced by engineers, owners, designers, and contractors. Safety factors come in many guises: standard procedure, field experience, assumption, rules of thumb, safety factor. The paper discusses the methodology used to replace oversized or incorrectly selected pumps. After the programme was completed, the owner estimated annual savings in data processing pumping of USD 101 600.
