Summary

THE AUTHOR HAS PRODUCED A STUDIED ACCOUNT OF THE STRATOSPHERIC OZONE DEPLETION PROBLEM. LONG TERM TRENDS FROM AS FAR BACK AS 1926 ARE ANALYSED SHOWING LITTLE CHANGE UNTIL COMPARATIVELY RECENTLY. THE PHOTOCHEMISTRY OF OZONE DEPLETION BY CHLORINE AND NITROUS OXIDE IS EXPLAINED AS IS THE EFFECT ON HUMANS OF INCREASED UV RADIATION. THE EFFORTS AT CONTROL OVER CFC PRODUCTION ARE SURVEYED AND IT IS POINTED OUT THAT EVEN IF ALL PRODUCTION STOPPED NOW, THE OZONE LAYER WILL STILL BE DEPLETED BY THE LONG TERM ACTION OF CFCS ALREADY RELEASED. THIS IS A PAPER EMBRACING CAUSE, EFFECT, AND STATE OF AFFAIRS SURROUNDING THE OZONE DEPLETION PROBLEM. D.W.H.
