Summary
History and present context of the ozone layer issue and the elimination of CFCs and HCFCs. Economic importance of the use of refrigeration and halogenated refrigerants. Recommendations of the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI): 1) availability of new, CFC-free, refrigerants by 1997; 2) support to developing countries in order to decrease their use of CFCs; 3) intensive use of the recovery, recycling and regeneration of CFCs; 4) make sure that the deadlines for HCFCs elimination are consistent with the development of reliable alternatives; 5) integration of the standards for ozone layer protection, prevention of greenhouse effect and control of energy consumption (ie, efficiency of equipment).
