Summary

The resorption refrigerator is a prospective air conditioner for the engine because it can be driven by the waste heat with the temperature as high as 300oC directly, it has high coefficient of performance (COP) for refrigeration, and it has no liquid refrigerant in the system that is a safety feature. Considering that the heat source from the exhaust gas of the engine is unstable but the requirement of the refrigeration is continuous, a resorption refrigerator with the energy storage function is analyzed. Different resorption pairs are discussed for the heat source temperature lower than 250oC, cooling source temperature of 30oC, and refrigeration temperature of 10oC, results showed that the working pair of MnCl2-BaCl2 is an optimal choice. Different energy storage materials for the high temperature heat source and refrigeration output are also discussed, and the phase change materials of “21.6KCl-78.4AlCl3” and “82Ga-12Sn-6Zn” are chosen for the energy storage of waste gas and refrigeration power, respectively. A refrigerator with the cooling power of 3kW is designed for the cars. Analysis shows that 5.5 kg and 4.7 kg composite adsorbents of MnCl2 and BaCl2 will be required for the system. The air conditioner could provide the refrigeration power by more than two hours if the car stopped. About one hour the cooling power is provided by the energy stored in the phase change material of waste gas, and another 1.2 h is provided by the phase change material for storing cooling energy.
