THE POSSIBLE ROLE OF CHLOROFLUOROCARBONS IN OZONE DEPLETION.

Author(s) : DIPROSE G.

Summary

THE PRESENCE OF OZONE IN THE STRATOSPHERE IS DUE TO THE OXYGEN CYCLE DESCRIBED BY CHAPMAN, TO WHICH OTHER DEPLETION PROCESSES MUST BE ADDED. ONE OF THEM INVOLVES CHLOROFLUOROCARBONS. STUDIES WERE UNDERTAKEN AND SHOWED THE SIGNIFICANT ROLE OF CHLORINE CARRIED BY R11 AND R12. MODELS WERE DEVELOPED AND MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE. IF CFC PLAY A ROLE IN STRATOSPHERE, THEY ARE NOT ALONE. ALL POTENTIAL PERTURBERS OF STRATOSPHERIC OZONE MUST BE CONSIDERED TOGETHER.
