Summary

Non-azeotropic refrigerant mixtures (NARMs) are regarded as the most promising possibilities for replacing CFCs and HCFCs when it is not possible to find suitable substitutes in the range of single-component fluids, as it is for R502 and R22. The distinctive characteristics of NARMs are surveyed with reference to their impact on the energy efficiency of the refrigeration cycle and on the reliability of the operation of the refrigerating plant. It is stressed that a non-azeotropic mixture should be evaluated with reference to the technology today in use for traditional refrigerants, as the compression vapour refrigeration cycle offers much potential for innovation and can be adjusted as required for effective use of such fluids.
