Summary

AN INVENTORY OF COOLING AND FREEZING SYSTEMS USED IN HOLLAND HAS BEEN PREPARED BY A MINISTERIAL DEPARTMENT. THIS INVENTORY COMPRISES A DESCRIPTION OF EACH SYSTEM, A LIST OF REFRIGERANTS AND OTHER COOLING MEDIA USED AND THEIR LEVEL OF TOXICITY, A LIMITED INVESTIGATION INTO THE NUMBER OF SYSTEMS IN USE. AN ANALYSIS HAS BEEN MADE OF THE CONSEQUENCES OF POSSIBLE CONTACT BETWEEN PRODUCTS AND COOLING OR FREEZING MEDIA AND IT IS STATED THAT INDIRECT COOLING SYSTEMS PRESENT THE HIGHEST RISK AS REGARDS CONTAMINATION OF FOODSTUFFS. RECOMMENDATIONS HAVE BEEN PREPARED TO LIMIT THE RISKS OF PRODUCT-MEDIA CONTACT BY USING A LIST OF APPROVED CHEMICALS OR THE USE OF COLOUR INDICATORS. REFERENCE IS MADE TO THE DUTCH STANDARD NEN 3380 .
