Summary

The internal loads and the solar gains through windows usually provide an important contribution to the summer cooling loads of a building. The inertial properties of the building components may help to reduce this effect by attenuating and shifting in time the release of these thermal fluxes. When applying the harmonic analysis for the prediction of the cooling loads, the effects of internal loads and solar gains are described through the definition of the surface factor, which accounts for the fractions of the radiant thermal fluxes absorbed by the building components and released to the ambient. In the UNI EN 13786:2008, which defines the dynamic parameters to be used in the harmonic analysis, the surface factor is not taken into account, despite its relevance. In the present paper the dealing of internal loads and solar gains in the harmonic analysis will be addressed, by defining the surface factor and by calculating it for a number of common building components. The variation of this parameter with the thermophysical properties of the materials will be also underlined.
