Summary
Ammonia-water (NH3/H2O) and water-lithium bromide (H2O/LiBr) absorption heat pumping (AHP) technologies are widely used in large- and medium-scale applications for heating and/or cooling. This article aims to analyze some alternative absorption processes using NH3/H2O and other natural refrigerants. Therefore the investigated processes have been divided into three groups: AHP-processes using a condensable auxiliary fluid; NH3/H2O AHP-process using strong bases as additives (e.g. NaOH, KOH...); and absorption heat transformer (AHT)-process using partially miscible working mixtures. The analysis has been done by means of thermodynamic simulations using the software ASPEN PLUS and the results have been compared with conventional processes. The thermodynamic simulations have shown that some of the cycles seem to be promising for an application at low generator temperatures (NH3/H2O absorption cycle using strong bases as additives) and others might be promising for gas driven heating applications, but require more detailed investigation (e.g. Rojey cycle). For further experimental investigations a NH3/H2O absorption cycle using strong bases as additives has been chosen.
