Transcritical CO2 heat pump prototype development for simultaneous water cooling and heating.
Author(s) : SARKAR J., BHATTACHARYYA S., RAMGOPAL M.
Summary
In this investigation, a transcritical CO2 heat pump system for simultaneous water cooling and heating was designed and a prototype for 1 ton cooling capacity was developed. The fabrication procedure, the test facility and the test procedure are reported in this article. The system behaviour and performance have been studied experimentally for various operating conditions. The performances of the compressor, the gas cooler and the evaporator have been studied individually. Finally, the technique for optimum discharge pressure setting of the system by varying working fluid mass charge has been demonstrated. Uncertainty analyses show reasonably acceptable results. A transient study shows that the system took about 15 minutes to attain steady state. A study on the system behaviour with varying expansion valve openings shows that the valve opening has a significant effect near the full valve closing condition. A performance study with varying compressor discharge pressure shows both the cooling and heating outputs to increase with discharge pressures due to increase in refrigerant mass flow rate. Individual component performances exhibit good agreement with design data.
