Summary

One of the most important postharvest operations is surely the transport of vegetable products at controlled temperatures. These goods are essentially transported by road; only a small percentage of products is transported by rail, and air and marine transport is negligible. The solution is to combine all means of transport and particularly to consider the road-rail combination. This article describes the different solutions to transport at controlled temperature of perishable products by road, by train and by ship. Special attention is paid to combined road-rail transport and to the consequent social, environmental and economic benefits.
