POSTHARVEST DISEASES IN PEARS ARE ADEQUATELY CONTROLLED BY CHLORINE IN THE FLOTATION WATER AND FUNGICIDAL SPRAYS ON THE FRUIT DURING PACKING OPERATIONS. RESISTANCE TO FUNGICIDES IS A POTENTIAL PROBLEM AND, TO AVOID THE PROBLEM, ALTERNATING FUNGICIDES WITH DIFFERENT MODES OF ACTION IS RECOMMENDED. STORAGE TEMPERATURES OF 272 TO 272.5 K (-1 TO -0.5 DEG C) NOT ONLY RETAIN QUALITY BUT ALSO SUPPRESS FUNGAL ACTION. BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF POSTHARVEST ROTS SHOWS EXCELLENT PROMISE AND FURTHER RESEARCH SHOULD LEAD TO COMMERCIAL APPLICATION OF THE TECHNIQUE.
