Summary

A refrigerant test facility was developed at the University of Brighton to determine the local heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop during evaporation and condensation in horizontal tubes. The test facility was successfully validated with R22 before starting the experiments with new non-ozone depleting refrigerants. Experimental results were obtained for three refrigerant mixtures, namely R404A, R407C and Isceon 59 over a wide range of test conditions. These experimental results were compared with several correlations to assess their suitability to estimate the local heat transfer coefficient. The poor agreement of these correlations with experimental results led to the development of a modified model. The average deviation has been reduced by 20% for Isceon 59 and by 15% for R407C.
