Summary
Ammonia has clear benefits as a refrigerant, but can be relatively expensive for small to medium sized systems. However, a new concept using ammonia has now been developed for cold store and freezer plant which draws together existing technologies and integrates these within an efficient, compact, standalone packaged unit complete with air cooled condenser and housing. The packaged unit design significantly reduces site installation costs by eliminating the requirement to construct a plantroom with a gas detection and ventilation system. With the new concept, site works are limited to the installation of one or two ceiling mounted coolers arranged for reverse cycle defrost and designed for optimal performance with a low pressure receiver system, eliminating any requirement for the installation of refrigerant pumps and minimising the ammonia charge. This paper will consider the total cost of ownership of a packaged ammonia system for a cold store or freezer plant and will demonstrate how this new concept could allow an end user to select an ammonia based system where previously this would have been uneconomic or impractical. Other benefits of a low charge packaged ammonia plant for this type of application will also be taken into account, including maximising energy efficiency, health and safety, commissioning, maintenance and environmental concerns. A case study will be presented to assess the advantages of this concept.
