Summary
Optimal design and operation of heat pumps gain interest to exploit their entire decarbonization potential. While the design of fuel-fired heaters is straightforward due to high heating capacities and supply temperatures over a wide operating range, the design of heat pumps is complex due to their inherent refrigerant dependency and off-design. Still, off-design is subordinate when designing heat pumps yielding to undersized or oversized systems. To design heat pumps optimally, this paper investigates the impact of the refrigerant on the heating capacity within the operating range. We specifically design R717 and R290 heat pumps and compare them with an R134a heat pump, using a simplified energy hub for district heating as a case study. The results emphasize that the refrigerant-dependent off-design of heat pumps can reduce efficiency benefits during the design phase. Although the 𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶 of R717 is 23% higher than the 𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶 of R134a at the design point, the advantage is reduced to less than 7% in the system analysis, considering the off-design.
