Summary

As a result of increasing environmental concerns, the use of ammonia is more common today than before. Ammonia is, however, toxic and any misuse would lead to serious physiological disorders as well as damage to physical facilities. In Northern Europe, where there is a long history of ammonia use, the most advanced and/or stringent regulations, guidelines, etc. have been developed. The article presents the current status in Northern Europe, typical recommended safety practices and typical design and operating guidelines for the use of ammonia.
