Use of CO2 in free cooling systems.

Author(s) : RASMUSSEN P.

Summary

Free cooling is a solution when the temperature of the cooling need is above the outdoor temperature. To increase efficiency on a yearly basis, the objective is to raise the temperature level at which free cooling can be applied in order to achieve more hours of free cooling operation. By replacing the traditional glycol based chiller system with a CO2 based system, the benefits of phase transition and an increased heat transfer coefficient are utilized and the temperature limit is raised, which will lower the annual energy consumption. This paper describes a project, where a CO2 based free cooling system using a thermal pump is developed. A system Calculations show a significant reduction in the energy consumption. For a Danish based cooling system, energy consumption will be reduced by 65% compared to purely mechanical cooling systems and 35% compared to a glycol chiller cooling system. The challenges and solutions connected with e.g. the high pressure needed and the generation of thermal pump power is also described.
