Summary

This course, organized by the United States National Committee for the IIR, was given at the Purdue University, on July 13 and 14, 1992. It provides information about the various approaches of different countries to the technological challenges posed by the phase-out of chlorinated refrigerants. Particular attention is focused on trends, unresolved problems, future challenges and opportunities. The lectures given were notably the following ones: refrigerating technologies during and after the refrigerant phase-out; refrigerants after the 1992 Montreal Protocol revision; global climate change; Japanese challenge; CFC-and HCFC-substitution in Europe; the thermodynamic performance of new refrigerants; development needs for absorption refrigeration; phase-out of CFCs: a challenge to the food industry; research and development opportunities for ammonia.
