Vapour injected scroll compressors in commercial refrigeration concept and performance evaluation.

Summary
A vapour-injected scroll compressor can accommodate mid-pocket inter-stage injection and hence enable the economised cycle within one compressor-enhancing system performance especially for low temperature refrigeration. This paper first describes the economised vapour injection scroll compressor concept, its key components, associated performance and application aspects for commercial refrigeration systems. Emphasis is then given to the performance evaluation of such compressors. All the operating parameters are presented and their influence on the system performance evaluated. Apart from the typical pressure and temperatures influencing the compressor performance, the heat exchanger used to subcool the liquid and the expansion device operating conditions, have a strong influence on the injected mass flow in the compressor and hence on the overall system performance. The condenser or "natural" subcooling, the economiser vapour superheat and the approach temperature will all influence the compressor capacity and power. Finally some design guidelines are presented that are aimed at optimum performance of the combination compressor/economiser.
