Walnut sorting according to their internal quality: primary results.

Summary

Empty walnuts must be rejected from marketed sets. At present they are removed by an air jet. But this technique still gives 6% error, whereas the maximum allowed error is 2%. The authors have tested 3 methods to sort walnuts: weight, density and X-ray transmission. The results of these methods are compared to a human assessment of walnut quality into 5 classes. These methods could be improved to meet grocery store requirements.
