Water: a working fluid for a compression heat pump with a liquid ring compressor.

Summary

A high-temperature compression heat pump with a liquid-ring compressor and water as working fluid was developed. A single- and a two-stage liquid-ring compressor were tested. Water is a suitable working fluid in a closed compression heat-pump cycle at evaporating temperatures above 60 deg C. The stability of the ring liquid that is needed for the compression is the limiting criteria for achieving the demanded running hours in industry. Mineral heat transfer oils are not suitable as ring liquids for high-temperature applications. However, experiments with silicon oil and perfluorated hydrocarbons tested in a new laboratory-size heat pump were positive. The density of the ring has an important effect on the COP.
