A SUMMARY IS GIVEN OF CURRENT RESEARCH IN FINDING CFC SUBSTITUTES. IN PART 1, THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES REFRIGERANTS' CONTRIBUTION TO THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT AND THE SEARCH FOR ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES FOR INSTALLATIONS. TABULAR DATA, INCLUDING MOLECULAR DIAGRAMS, ARE PRESENTED ON CURRENT REFRIGERANTS AND POSSIBLE SUBSTITUTES, AND ON THE DECISIONS TAKEN BY THE LONDON CONFERENCE. IN PART 2, THE AUTHOR PRESENTS: TEST RESULTS ON THE VAPOUR PRESSURE, BOILING-LIQUID DENSITY AND COMPRESSION BEHAVIOUR IN THE GAS PHASE, OF R123 AND R134A ; A MOLLIER DIAGRAM OF R134A ; GRAPHS ON SWEPT VOLUME, COMPRESSION TEMPERATURE, COP AND COMPRESSION RATIO OF R142B-R22 ; AND TEST RESULTS OF THIS MIXTURE IN A CAR AIR CONDITIONER. HE THEN GIVES DATA ON AMMONIA AND R22 AND REPORTS ON THE OUTLOOK OF AN R152A-R134A MIXTURE (WHICH WOULD HAVE THE ADVANTAGES OF R152A WITHOUT ITS FLAMMABILITY).
