Summary

Traditionally, tuna vessels employ tanks cooled by using coils with smooth tubes held on the lateral walls, the bottom and the roof of the tanks to freeze and preserve fish. In these conventional tanks, the fish may be trapped between the coil tubes or between the coil tubes and the tank walls during the freezing process, which could make difficult to release the frozen fish and bring about coils damage. Taking this into account a new type of tanks is being proposed by a Spanish company. In these new tanks, the coils are replaced by half-pipes, i.e. pipes cut lengthwise, welded directly on the tank walls. To evaluate the thermal behaviour of the new tanks a scale prototype has been built and tested at our laboratory. In this paper, the prototype and the experimental set-up are described, the experimental procedure is detailed and preliminary experimental results are presented and discussed.
