Environmentally friendly non-flammable refrigerants.

Summary

Recently, various partially-fluorinated propenes having a double bond in the molecule, with a lower GWP, have been proposed as refrigerants. It is 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (HFO-1234yf) to attract attention most in those. The GWP of this refrigerant is 4. However, this refrigerant is flammable. When a refrigerant is flammable, the use of a highly safe material and/or structure in the electrical system will be required, and an upper limit needs to be set on the amount of the refrigerant which can be charged into an apparatus. In this paper, the change to a non-flammable refrigerant by mixing of HFO-1234yf with other non-flammable refrigerants has been studied. The relationship between the flammability and the mixing ratios was investigated, and environmentally more friendly refrigerants without flammable range compared with those used are now proposed.
