A comparison between two air-conditioning systems.

Summary

A technical and economic comparison is presented between a traditional air-conditioning centralized system using fan-coil units connected to a four-pipe water circuit, and a system performing direct refrigeration and heating, by means of reversible heat pumps. The comparison refers to a small building with three floors, 310 m2 each: the ground floor is for commercial activities, the others are for offices. Three heat pump units are considered, one for each floor; they are all multi-split models, air condensed and controlled by inverters. The author asserts that the first costs of the two systems are similar, if they provide equivalent control of temperature and humidity, while the running costs are assumed lower for the heat-pump system.
