A future for flammables?

Author(s) : HAUKAS H. T.

Summary

Analysis and tests show that flammable fluids, for example propane, may be particularly well suited for domestic and small commercial refrigerators and freezers. Very small charges make the flammability hazard acceptably low. In larger units this problem may be managed by proper system design (use of indirect systems, for example). Acceptance of flammable refrigerants, and design and optimization of systems for such fluids, would influence future refrigeration considerably. Improved efficiency in the domestic sector, which consumes immense amounts of energy, may be a likely outcome. Furthermore, and even more important, it may make refrigerators, and refrigeration in general, more easily accessible to the public in poor countries.
