Isobutane as refrigerant for domestic refrigeration in developing countries.

Author(s) : AGARWAL R. S.

Summary

Hydrocarbon refrigerants like isobutane, propane and mixtures of propane-isobutane have zero ozone depletion potential, negligible global warming potential and are compatible with commonly used mineral lubricating oils. These refrigerants also possess excellent thermodynamic and thermophysical properties even better than CFC refrigerants. The paper presents the salient features of isobutane technology with a view to assess its suitability for domestic refrigeration. Isobutane technology is almost similar to CFC-12 except the flammable nature of refrigerant. The flammability considerations of refrigerant can be duly addressed in the product design.
