CFC REFRIGERANTS WERE INVENTED PRIMARILY TO REPLACE THE TOXIC REFRIGERANTS, METHYL CHLORIDE AND SULPHUR DIOXIDE, USED IN MANY SMALL COMMERCIAL REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS IN THE 1920 TO 1930 PERIOD. THE ARTICLE GIVES A RESUME OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF REFRIGERATION WITH RESPECT TO REFRIGERANTS USED UP TO THE EVOLUTION IN 1930 OF THE CFC GROUP BY GENERAL MOTORS IN THE USA, WHO FORMED, WITH E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS, THE KINETIC CHEMICALS COMPANY TO DEVELOP CFC MANUFACTURE. D.W.H.
