A practical air cycle system for motor cars?

Summary

An air-cycle automobile air-conditioning system is an obvious replacement for leakage-prone vapour compression. A practical system is suggested, components and methods being argued to meet current requirements. An air cycle would cool a glycol solution. The turbocompressor is electrically driven, the power taken from an enlarged alternator. The compressor, expander and switched reluctance motor would be installed in the engine compartment, a combined intercooler and regenerator under the car. Main disadvantages are high power requirement, mitigated by being maximum when the vehicle is stationary, and possible frost blocking of heat exchange passages. D.W.H.
