Summary

The effect of different periods of low temperature on the vase life of the "Serena" rose variety was studied. The flowers were treated with different levels of sucrose before cold storage. Those treated with 60-80-100 g/l of sucrose following 3 days storage at 2 deg C had a vase life which was not significantly different to the control of 11 days. Similarly, flowers pulsed with 80-100 g/l and stored for 6 days had a similar vase life to those kept in distilled water. "Serena" roses stored in a refrigerator for 3 days at the tight bud stage and pulsed with 80-100 g/l of sucrose, flowered and continued to be of very good quality.
