A primer on refrigerants. 2.

Type of article: Article

Summary

In the second part of this series, the author takes a look at the second generation refrigerants (1931 - 199Os), which stood for safety, performance and durability. These were the highly popular CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) and HCFC (hydrochlorofluorocarbon) refrigerants. However, because of their ozone depleting potential (ODP), CFCs have been phased out while HCFCs are being phased out. These have largely been replaced by the third generation refrigerants (1990s to date) such as HFCs (hydrofluorocarbons) and natural refrigerants like HCs (hydrocarbons), CO2 and Ammonia.
