A primer on refrigerants. 3.
Author(s) : RAVINDRA D.
Type of article: Article
Summary
In part 2 of this Classroom series, the author had discussed CFC and HCFC refrigerants and the non-ozone depleting HFCs that replaced them. The article concluded with a comment that HFC refrigerants are themselves facing a pjase-out because of their high GWP. The commonly used HFCs, such as HFC 134a, R 407C, R 410A, R 404A, etc. have high GWP values of well above 1000. In the wake of increasing concerns over global warming and climate change, Europe has been foremost in restricting or prohibiting the use of high GWP HFCs. An increasing number of states in the USA are doing likewise. Therefore, an urgent search is on among the scientific community and refrigerant manufacturers for suitable low GWP refrigerants.
