A review of alternative working fluids in transport refrigeration systems.

Author(s) : KWON S. L., BERGE J., NALEY L.

Summary

The paper reviews the performance requirements of transport refrigeration, the test program developed to measure alternative refrigerant performance, and compressor and other component modifications made to accomodate alternative refrigerants. The performance of HCFC blends based on R22 is presented and evaluated for suitability of use in retrofit applications. The performance of HFC blends is also presented and evaluated for suitability of use in new unit applications. The leading R502 "transition" replacement for use in transport refrigeration units are R403B (69L) and R402A (HP80). From the standpoint of unit performance, the laboratory test results show R404A (an HFC refrigerant) to be the best alternative refrigerant blend for use in long term and new transport refrigeration applications. Evaluation of extended field trial tests has confirmed this laboratory finding under all refrigeration load temperatures and ambient conditions.
