Summary
Heat pumps have proven their potential in space heating and hot water supply in the domestic sector in many countries of Europe and around the world. The European Union and the UK have decided to increase by 20% and 15% respective their share of renewable energy in final energy consumption by 2020 in order to reduce green house gas (GHGs) emissions. This implies an exploration of the role of retrofitted electric heat pumps and investment in renewable energy sources. However the existing UK domestic electricity network has insufficient capacity to handle a vast deployment of electric heat pumps unless a major building insulation programme and/or an extensive electricity infrastructure upgrade is carried out. In this paper the role of the diesel engine heat pump (DEHP) system, concept and its potential has been reviewed. Furthermore DEHP compliance with UK climate change policy, compatibility with potential electric car deployment, bio fuel and reduced CO2 emission in space and water heating with various application points have been presented.
