Summary
Research carried out among 10 people working in the tertiary sector in air-conditioned offices has shown that: air conditioning is ambivalent because it increases both discomfort and comfort; its use could be restricted to reducing heat excesses during summer; it causes a number of health problems and sensory discomfort; it results in disagreement between the notions of natural and artificial air; it creates a physical and symbolic partitioning by imposing window and door closing; its operation is unreliable and control unsatisfactory; it is however considered a necessity in modern office buildings. Nevertheless none of the persons questioned wishes to use air conditioning in the home since they consider it an inadequate technology for family life. Even the simplest air conditioner is considered by them to be a gimmick. J.L.
